Jane takes up the challenge to Beat The Boss
Jane Louise Pickup, Managing Director of award-winning Style Counsel Interiors has been putting her business skills to the test during two days filming for the BBC’s new series of Beat The Boss.
The show encourages raw business & entrepreneurial talent amongst young people and Jane was approached by the BBC’s production team who were looking for top UK business people to participate.
Beat The Boss is presented by ‘UK Apprentice’ Saira Khan. In each episode the producers pit a team of 3 children (The Bright Sparks) aged 10-12 against a team of 3 adult business brains (The Big Shots). Both teams are very competitive and Jane’s brief was “You've got to want to beat the kids as they certainly want to beat the adults!”.
The Bright Sparks and the Big Shots are given the same brief to create a product for the children's market. Each team must come up with ideas for their product and then work with a leading company, to produce prototypes of their design.
The prototypes are then product-tested by 25 children who vote on which product is the best. They are unaware of which team made each product to ensure that the whole process is fair. The prototype products and the results are revealed to both teams, by Saira, on the final day of filming.
At the end of the first day of filming Jane commented “I’m quite competitive by nature and always love to be thrown the gauntlet. So when the BBC approached me to take part in the next series of Beat The Boss I saw it as an unique opportunity to put my thinking skills to the test…and to have some fun! The filming took place over a 3-day period in Cheshire and was both challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. We’ll find out the results of the children’s panel on the last day of filming in a few weeks time and the competitive streak in me is keen to know if we won!”

Jane Louise Pickup was awarded Congleton Borough Business Person of the Year in March 2008. In July 2008 her company Style Counsel Interiors won the North West regional finals of the National Business Awards sponsored by Orange in the Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year category. The company is now a finalist in the National Awards in November of this year competing against the other regional finalists for the coveted National Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year Award.
